SAFE Parish

The Archdiocese of Cincinnati requires all adults who have contact with children attend an Archdiocesan Child Protection Session and complete a criminal background check through Selection.com. The Ohio Revised Code also requires certain employees (for example, teachers, teachers’ aides, school employees, cafeteria monitors, playground monitors, and coaches with pupil activity supervisor permits) to have a criminal background check through fingerprinting. The laws of the State of Ohio and the policies of the Archdiocese of Cincinnati regarding criminal background checks through fingerprinting must be adhered to.

Neither volunteers nor employees may have contact with children until an acceptable background check through fingerprinting and attendance at an Archdiocesan Child Protection Session are completed in accord with the current policies of the Archdiocese.

Archdiocesan Policies Regarding Ongoing Education (Monthly Bulletins):

Once a person has completed the in-person Child Protection training, they will begin receiving monthly bulletins from Virtus.org.  It is the responsibility of all volunteers and employees to keep current on their bulletins.

Regarding those who fall behind in their monthly bulletins:

  • All persons who have attended a VIRTUS® Protecting God’s Children Training Session must keep up with the continuing education component of VIRTUS® by reading all monthly VIRTUS® Training Bulletins.  If a person falls behind by three or more Bulletins (whether in consecutive months or not) he / she must “catch up” before having contact with young people.

  • All persons who fall behind by six or more bulletins will have their VIRTUS® accounts suspended by the Archdiocese.  No suspended person can have any contact with children until after he / she contacts his / her Safe Environment Coordinator to have his / her VIRTUS® User Account reactivated, and then “catches up” with all previously unread Bulletins.

  • All persons who fall 18 or more bulletins behind must either retake the in-person Child Protection training, or request permission to take a 90 minute online refresher course.  They can request the online training through their Safe Environment Coordinator.

Regarding those transferring from another Diocese:

Any person who wants to transfer from another diocese into the Archdiocese of Cincinnati must meet two conditions:  (i) the person must have attended a live VIRTUS® Child Awareness Session less than two years ago, and (ii) the person wishing to transfer his / her User Account must be current on reading all VIRTUS® monthly Bulletins.  Only then can that person’s VIRTUS® User Account transfer from his / her previous diocese into Cincinnati.

     Regarding Background checks:

As of January 1, 2014, all volunteers and employees must complete a background check through Selection.com.  Volunteers and employees can access Selection.com through their VIRTUS account either during the registration process or after they have attended a Child Protection class.  To complete the background check, see the instructions in the following link.  How to run a background check from within VIRTUS

Ascension will pay for background checks for our own employees and volunteers. This is much easier to do after someone has completed the Child Protection class, so Ascension encourages people to wait until after they have done the training and t hen contact the Safe Environment Coordinator to receive a payment token.

If you have further questions, need to have your account re-activated, or need a payment token for a background check, contact Joe Ollier, Ascension’s Safe Environment Coordinator.    email:  jollier@ascensionkettering.org or phone: 253-5171 x113
